Kongu Vellala Gounder is a branch of the Vellalar caste with a feudal history. They have a tradition of supporting powerful kings and were respected for their loyalty and hard work. They were responsible for starting several welfare measures for the good of the public in the Kongunadu zone, which now comprises the districts in the western part of Tamil Nadu: Erode, Coimbatore, Gobichettipalayam, Tirupur, Nilgiris, Karur, Namakkal, northern Dindigul, western Tiruchirapalli, Salem, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri and western Vellore.
